Visa FAQ's
<< Return to main FAQ's Do I need to apply in person for my visa? All applicants, including minors, must make an appointment before coming in person to apply for a visa.
How long in advance should I apply for a visa?
It is advisable to apply for the visa at least 3 weeks prior to your prospective departure date. In some cases the Consular Department may need more time to process your visa application.
I leave more than 3 months from now. Can I apply for a visa?
It is the responsibility of the applicant to be aware of the delays and the requirements for the issuance of the visa before making travel arrangements and before applying for the visa. Note that neglecting to include a document or to fill out the forms properly may extend the processing time. We cannot accept any application more than 90 days before the anticipated arrival in the Netherlands. This applies to both short stay and long stay applicants.
I have an advance parole document. Do I need an airport transit visa?
YES. An advance parole document and approval notice are not sufficient for transit through the Netherlands. You must obtain an airport transit visa even if your layover is very short.
I have an US Resident Alien Card (Greencard), do I need an airport transit visa?
No, holders of a valid Greencard do not need an airport transit visa.
My US Resident Alien Card/US visa has expired and has to be renewed/extended. How can I apply for a Schengen visa?
We can only accept applicants holding a valid US Resident Alien Card/US visa. If yours has expired, please contact the US Immigration and Naturalization Service.
My trip includes several Schengen countries. Can I apply for my visa at the Consulate of the Netherlands?
While the Consulate of the Netherlands issues Schengen visas, the Netherlands must be your main destination. If you're visiting multiple Schengen countries, you must prove that your stay in the Netherlands is longer than or equal to your stay in other Schengen countries. If an equal number of nights is spent in all Schengen countries, you must apply at the consulate representing the port of first entry.
I have several hours of layover at the airport and would like to visit the Netherlands. Do I have to apply for an airport transit visa or a regular visa?
Airport transit visa are only good for short stopovers while you are waiting a few hours for your onward flight in the airport's international transit area. However, if you want to leave the airport, the regular visa requirements for a short-stay Schengen visa apply. Click here for more information about Regular Visa Requirements.
Do I need medical insurance?
Please check carefully whether your medical insurance will also cover costs for medical treatment abroad. You need to submit documentation confirming: international general medical/health insurance coverage of $45,000 dollars and emergency evacuation coverage. If you do not have medical insurance, you must purchase insurance for the entire duration of your trip and provide proof of purchase. You can do so by visiting www.travelex.com at 1-800-228-9792 or www.insuremytrip.com at 1-800-487-4722.
